About Higher School of Applied Arts

The Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague, commonly known as UMPRUM, is one of the most prestigious creative institutions in Central Europe. Founded in 1885, the university maintains a long-standing tradition of excellence in fine arts, design, and architecture. It provides a highly selective and intimate environment for talented students who wish to push the boundaries of contemporary visual culture.

Academics

The university is organized into six departments covering Architecture, Design, Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Graphic Design, and Theory and History of Art. Teaching is centered around the studio model, where small groups of students work closely under the mentorship of leading active artists and designers. This multidisciplinary approach encourages students to collaborate across different media while mastering traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Notable programs include Glass, Fashion Design, and Type Design and Typography, which are recognized globally for their innovation.

International Students

UMPRUM offers a welcoming environment for international students through its Visual Arts master’s program, which is taught entirely in English. The university participates extensively in the Erasmus+ program, hosting a diverse community of exchange students from across the globe. Support services include assistance with visa processes and a dedicated international office that helps students integrate into the local creative scene. Student organizations and gallery exhibitions provide frequent opportunities for international students to showcase their work to the Prague public.

Campus & Location

The university is located in the heart of Prague, with its historic main building situated in the Old Town near the Vltava River. Students benefit from being within walking distance of major cultural landmarks, including the Rudolfinum and the National Gallery. Recently, the school expanded into a modern technology center in Mikulandská Street, which features state of the art workshops and equipment. Prague offers an affordable and vibrant lifestyle for students, with an efficient public transportation system that connects the campus to various artistic districts.

Career Outcomes

Graduates of UMPRUM enjoy high employment rates and often become leading figures in the European creative industries. The university maintains strong connections with prestigious brands and galleries, facilitating internships and professional collaborations during the course of study.
