About Academy of Performing Arts in Prague
The Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (AMU) is a prestigious institution in Central Europe dedicated to artistic education, established in 1945. It is the largest art school in the Czech Republic, fostering creative potential in an inspiring and internationally recognized environment. AMU emphasizes a personalized approach to education, with small group instruction and close collaboration between students and instructors.
AMU comprises three independent faculties: the Theatre Faculty (DAMU), the Film and TV School (FAMU), and the Music and Dance Faculty (HAMU). The teaching approach is rooted in hands-on practice and close collaboration with active professionals from Europe's cultural and intellectual spheres, including renowned filmmakers, theatre dramaturges, directors, actors, composers, and dancers. Notable programs taught in English include Authorial Acting, Dance Pedagogy, Photography, Cinematography, Composition, and Directing Cinema and Digital Media. AMU also conducts artistic research and, in some departments, research in art history and theory.
AMU offers a continually expanding portfolio of English-taught programs at bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, alongside short-term courses and exchange opportunities. The International Affairs section provides support for international students, including orientation programs, Czech language courses, counseling services, and assistance with visas and residence permits. AMU fosters an open, friendly, and inclusive international environment, encouraging cross-cultural exchange and collaboration. The university is involved in numerous international professional networks and has over 200 Erasmus+ agreements with partner schools.
AMU does not operate as a single enclosed campus; instead, its faculties and facilities are embedded within the historic and cultural center of Prague, all within close walking distance of one another. This "urban campus" provides students with constant exposure to professional artistic practice, with theatres, concert halls, cinemas, museums, and galleries forming part of their everyday environment. Prague is consistently ranked among the world's best student cities and is considered one of the safest cities globally, offering a vibrant and inspiring backdrop for artistic study and personal growth.
AMU places a strong emphasis on artistic practice, enabling many students to begin building their professional careers during their studies through real-world experience and collaborations. Graduates find opportunities in a wide range of fields, including theatre, film and television production, directing, acting, cinematography, screenwriting, music performance, composition, choreography, and sound design. The university leverages its extensive network of alumni and industry professionals to connect students with potential employers and collaborators, and offers career counseling, workshops, and internship programs. AMU alumni have achieved significant recognition, with students regularly receiving awards at major international and national festivals.
