About Western Carolina University
Academics
WCU offers over 115 undergraduate and more than 60 graduate programs across six colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Allied Professions, David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts, Health and Human Sciences, and Engineering and Technology. Notable programs include entrepreneurship, project management, teacher education, criminal justice, and the nation's first accredited four-year emergency medical care program. The university emphasizes an active-learning model, particularly in its Innovation Leadership and Entrepreneurship program, where students gain hands-on experience in running a business.
International Students
WCU is home to approximately 200 international students from over 35 countries, making up about 1.7% of the student body. The Office of Global Engagement (WCU Global) assists international students with visa processes, employment options, and maintaining legal status. International Student Consultants offer support with conversational English, understanding the American university system, and connecting students with resources. The university also fosters cultural integration through initiatives like the International Pals (I-Pals) program and the annual International Festival.
Campus & Location
The main campus is situated in Cullowhee, North Carolina, in a scenic valley surrounded by the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. While Cullowhee itself is a smaller community, the campus offers numerous amenities including residential facilities, two cafeterias, a food court, and a student recreation center with a rock wall and swimming pool. The natural surroundings provide ample opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and mountain biking, earning WCU recognition as a top outdoor adventure college in the Southeast. Asheville, a larger city, is located 52 miles east, and Atlanta, Georgia, is within a three-hour drive.
Career Outcomes
WCU demonstrates a strong commitment to career preparation, with a reported 95.7% success rate of graduates either employed full-time, part-time, or enrolled in continuing education. The Center for Career and Professional Development provides extensive services, including assistance with campus employment, internships, resume building, and interview skills. Many graduates, approximately 81%, choose to work within North Carolina, with a significant portion remaining in the western region, contributing to local economic development. The university also fosters industry connections through partnerships with businesses in the region, offering students valuable real-world experience and networking opportunities.
