About Oslo National Academy of the Arts
The Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO) is Norway's largest public institution for higher education in the arts, offering a diverse range of programs in visual arts, design, and performing arts. Established in 1996 through the merger of five independent colleges, KHiO is dedicated to educating artists and designers who can contribute significantly to society.
KHiO is structured into three main faculties: the Faculty of Design, the Faculty of Performing Arts, and the Faculty of Visual Arts, encompassing six departments: Design, Art and Craft, Academy of Fine Art, Academy of Dance, Academy of Opera, and Academy of Theatre. The teaching approach emphasizes artistic practice, independent study, and collaborative projects across disciplines. Notable programs include Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Fine Art, Design specializations, and various performing arts disciplines like Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Acting, and Opera. The Academy fosters multidisciplinary strengths, providing opportunities for students to collaborate across different artistic fields.
KHiO welcomes international students, with specific language proficiency requirements in Norwegian or English depending on the program. While most programs are taught in Norwegian, some Master's programs and courses are available in English. Support services include guidance and counseling, and accommodation assistance through the Student Welfare Organization (SiO). International students are encouraged to apply for housing early due to high demand. The Academy has an extensive student exchange program through Erasmus+, Nordplus, and bilateral agreements, promoting cultural integration and international networking.
The KHiO campus is situated in the vibrant Grรผnerlรธkka district of Oslo, a dynamic area known for its lively cultural scene, cafes, restaurants, shops, and galleries. The Academy occupies a converted sailcloth factory by the Akerselva River, offering a unique blend of historic architecture and modern facilities, including state-of-the-art studios, workshops, theaters, and performance spaces. The campus is well-connected by public transportation, including trams and buses, and is within walking distance of Oslo's city center, providing easy access to cultural venues and attractions.
Graduates from KHiO generally experience high employment rates in their respective fields, a testament to the Academy's practical focus and strong industry connections. Alumni pursue diverse career paths as visual artists, designers, actors, dancers, choreographers, and opera singers, among others. KHiO provides career counseling, workshops on portfolio development and job searching, and leverages its ties with Norway's cultural and creative industries to offer internships and job placement opportunities. The Academy also encourages and supports entrepreneurial initiatives for students interested in starting their own creative businesses.
