Gerrit Rietveld Academie
About Gerrit Rietveld Academie
Academics
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design program, which begins with a general formative "Basicyear" before students choose one of twelve specializations for in-depth study. These specializations include Architectural Design, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Fashion, Photography, Ceramics, and Jewellery - Linking Bodies, among others. The teaching approach encourages critical thinking through making, aiming to develop students' skills to shape and materialize creative processes. The academy also offers a five-year part-time Bachelor's program called DOGtime and several Master's programs housed within the Sandberg Instituut.
International Students
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is an internationally oriented institution, with over half of its students coming from outside the Netherlands. English is the common language of communication at the academy, benefiting students as the arts and culture world is inherently international. The International Office provides support for matters such as residence permits and exchange programs. While the academy does not actively recruit international students through scholarships or campaigns, it values diversity and strives for a balance between Dutch, European, and non-EU students.
Campus & Location
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is situated in Amsterdam, a vibrant city known for its rich cultural life. The main building, designed by Gerrit Rietveld himself, was completed in 1966, with subsequent expansions including the Benthem Crouwel Building and the FedLev building. The campus provides a dynamic environment for artistic exploration. Amsterdam offers a wealth of museums, galleries, and cultural events, providing an inspiring backdrop for art and design students.
Career Outcomes
Graduates of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie are prepared to enter the art world as professional artists or designers. The curriculum fosters a culture of experimentation and authenticity, allowing students the freedom to redefine their artistic practices. Many alumni have gone on to achieve notable careers in various creative fields, including renowned artists, designers, and even politicians. While specific employment rates are not readily available, the academy aims to enable graduates to sustain their work independently and become sources of artistic inspiration.
