Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is a public university located in Kakamega, Kenya, established in 2007. It has grown to become a prominent institution in Kenya, dedicated to academic excellence, research, innovation, and community service. With approximately 25,000 students across its main campus in Kakamega and satellite campuses, MMUST fosters a vibrant multicultural environment.

Academics

MMUST offers over 400 academic programs at undergraduate and graduate levels across 11 schools, with a strong emphasis on science and technology. Key faculties include Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences and Technology, Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Computing and Informatics, Education, Engineering and the Built Environment, Medicine, Natural Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery, and Public Health. International Students

MMUST actively champions cultural diversity and inclusion, having hosted students from various countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Somalia, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and exchange students from Zimbabwe, Norway, USA, Germany, Finland, Netherlands, and Colombia. The Directorate of International Relations and Academic Linkages (DIAL) supports international students and exchange programs. Internationalization is a strategic pillar for MMUST, and the university provides various academic and non-academic facilities and services, including study abroad and exchange programs. An International Students' Guild (ISG) also exists to support cultural integration.

Campus & Location

MMUST's main campus is situated in Kakamega, the capital of Kakamega County in western Kenya. Kakamega is described as a clean, livable, and organized town. The city is approximately 52 km north of Kisumu, a port city on Lake Victoria. Transportation within Kakamega primarily relies on "boda bodas" (motorcycle taxis) and "matatus" (minibus taxis), with regular taxis also available. Nearby attractions include the Kakamega Forest, known for its indigenous trees, diverse birdlife, and monkeys, and the Crying Stone of Ilesi.

Career Outcomes

MMUST focuses on producing "Critical Thinker-Change Agent Graduates" who are equipped to address societal challenges. The university has established industry links and partnerships, such as with Innovative Academic Placement Solutions (INAPS), to connect students with industrial attachments, internships, and job opportunities. MMUST also has a Science Park, Innovation, and Incubation Centre (SPIIC) that fosters industry-academia collaboration, promotes technology transfer, supports startup incubation, and aids in the commercialization of research. The MMUST Innovation Academy further identifies, nurtures, and mentors innovators within the university community, providing mentorship, funding, and business development support for early-stage startups.
