About Cork Institute of Technology

The Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) was a prominent higher education institution in Cork, Ireland, known for its practical, technology-focused programs. Established in 1973, it became a self-governing body in 1993 and consistently received recognition, including being named "Institute of Technology of the Year" multiple times. On January 1, 2021, CIT merged with the Institute of Technology, Tralee, to form Munster Technological University (MTU), Ireland's second technological university.

Academics

CIT, now part of MTU, offered a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines, including engineering, science, business, humanities, art, music, and maritime studies. The institution was composed of faculties like Engineering and Science, and Business and Humanities, alongside constituent colleges such as the CIT Crawford College of Art and Design, the CIT Cork School of Music, and the National Maritime College of Ireland. A key characteristic was its emphasis on applied learning and industry collaboration, with many programs incorporating work placements to provide hands-on experience.

International Students

MTU Cork provides dedicated support for international students, including orientation programs, visa assistance, language support, and cultural integration activities. The university encourages a vibrant cultural atmosphere with a diverse student body, fostering cultural exchange through events and student societies. English is the primary language of instruction, and non-native English speakers typically need to demonstrate proficiency through tests like IELTS or TOEFL for admission.

Campus & Location

The main campus, spanning approximately 80 acres, is located in Bishopstown, Cork, featuring academic departments, student facilities, a library, IT building, gymnasium, and sports pitches. Other campuses include the CIT Crawford College of Art and Design and the CIT Cork School of Music, both situated in Cork city center, and the National Maritime College of Ireland in Ringaskiddy. Cork itself is a lively city, offering various attractions like Blarney Castle and Elizabeth Fort, and the campus is well-served by public transportation, including bus services.

Career Outcomes

CIT, now MTU, has a strong focus on preparing students for successful careers, boasting an enviable record of providing excellent employment opportunities. The Career Services Office offers comprehensive support, including career counseling, job search strategies, CV clinics, and networking events with employers. Strong industry partnerships mean many programs include work placement opportunities, giving students valuable real-world experience. The institution was also recognized for its student entrepreneurship initiatives, fostering startups and award-winning projects.
