Ionian University - Zakynthos

The Ionian University, established in 1984, is a public higher education institution with a strong academic and research presence both in Greece and internationally. While its headquarters are in Corfu, the university has expanded its operations to include departments across four Ionian Islands: Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos. It is the academic successor to the Ionian Academy, the first modern Greek University, founded in 1824.

Academics

The Ionian University comprises five faculties and twelve departments, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. The Department of Environment, located in Zakynthos, is particularly notable, featuring state-of-the-art scientific equipment and teaching facilities, and offering a BSc in Environmental Science in Greek, and two English-taught MSc programs: "New Technologies in Environmental Education and Sustainable Development" and "Preservation & Management of Cultural Heritage." The university emphasizes interdisciplinarity, with many curricula combining science and art, and some departments, such as Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting, and Archives, Librarianship and Museology, being unique in Greece.

International Students

The Ionian University actively promotes internationalization and offers support services for international students. While the primary language of undergraduate programs is Greek, the Department of Environment in Zakynthos offers two Master's programs taught in English. The university participates in the Erasmus+ program, collaborating with almost 250 partner universities across Europe and beyond, facilitating student and staff exchanges and offering language learning opportunities.
