About The Animation Workshop
The Animation Workshop (TAW), part of VIA University College, is one of the worldโs leading schools for animation, visualization, and graphic storytelling. Located in a former military barracks in Viborg, Denmark, the institution is internationally recognized for its high artistic standards and deep integration with the global creative industry. It offers a unique, studio-based learning environment where students transform from passionate artists into professional creators.
The institution offers three highly regarded Bachelor of Arts programs in Character Animation, Computer Graphic Arts, and Graphic Storytelling, all taught entirely in English. The teaching approach is deeply rooted in a craft-based philosophy where students learn through hands-on project work and intensive workshops led by active industry professionals. This multidisciplinary environment ensures that students master both traditional artistic principles and cutting-edge digital technologies. Beyond degree programs, the school hosts a variety of professional training courses and residency programs that foster a culture of continuous learning and artistic experimentation.
With a student body representing over 40 different nationalities, the school provides a vibrant and multicultural atmosphere that welcomes creative minds from across the globe. International students benefit from a dedicated support system that assists with housing, visa processes, and integration into Danish society. The school encourages a close-knit community through various student organizations, social events, and collaborative projects that bridge cultural gaps. Because all core curriculum activities are conducted in English, international students can fully engage with their peers and faculty from their first day on campus.
The campus is situated in the historic city of Viborg, which serves as Denmarkโs official capital of animation and a UNESCO Creative City. The school is housed in the Arsenalet creative hub, providing students with direct access to professional studios and creative enterprises within a renovated military complex. Viborg offers a peaceful yet culturally rich lifestyle with scenic lakes and forests located within walking distance of the classroom. The city is well connected by train to major Danish hubs like Aarhus and Copenhagen, allowing students to explore the wider Nordic region easily.
The school maintains an exceptional employment rate, with many graduates securing positions at major studios such as Pixar, Disney, and Illumination Mac Guff shortly after finishing their studies. Strong industry connections are built into the curriculum through mandatory internships and portfolio reviews with top-tier recruiters. The presence of the Arsenalet business cluster on campus encourages a strong startup culture, helping many alumni launch their own independent studios. Career services provide lifelong networking opportunities and guidance, ensuring that students are well prepared for the competitive global animation market.
